COMPLEMENTARY AND ALTERNATIVE THERAPIES

Continuum Hospice Care/Jacob Perlow Hospice is deeply committed to the use of complementary therapies as a means of comforting our patients and their loved ones. We collaborate with many renowned and respected professionals and organizations to bring a variety of programs to our patients in the hospital, in nursing facilities, in our hospice residence, or in their own homes. Our programs include:

Medical Therapies

  • Speech
  • Physical
  • Occupational
  • Nutrition

Mind and Body

Many people are receptive to and even prefer alternative methods of pain and stress relief. We provide as many of these therapies as possible and actively pursue new methods of bringing both physical and emotional comfort to our patients and their loved ones.

  • Yoga
  • Body Mechanics
  • Meditation
  • Massage
  • Relaxation
  • Spa & Beauty Treatments
  • Reflexology
  • Acupuncture
  • Acupressure
  • Visualization
  • Tonalization
  • Aromatherapy
  • Nutrition

Arts and Crafts Therapy - Programs are performance based, experiential or interactive.

  • Music, including Bedside Harp and other performances
  • Visual Arts – painting, drawing
  • Knitting
  • Legacy projects, such as storytelling, quilting and scrapbooking
  • Literature and movies

Culinary Therapy

Our culinary program regularly brings catered family-style meals, high tea or pot lucks to the IPUs in order to promote camaraderie among the patients and their loved ones. These events provide a sense of normalcy – or even special occasion.

Horticulture

Whether in the cultivation of plants or in the admiration of arrangements, nature often invokes peace and calmness. We open figurative and literal doors to the outdoors by encouraging indoor and outdoor gardening, as well as encouraging nurseries, florists and event planners to contribute plants and flower arrangements for the pleasure of our patients and their families.

If you would like to contribute to our growing Mind and Body program, please call 212-420-2562 or email hospicevolunteer@chpnet.org.
